Domestic Violence Travel Supplement

The Department of Social Protection has introduced a Travel Supplement to help anyone subjected to domestic violence with additional travel costs. The scheme came into effect on 5 May 2026.

What is the Domestic Violence Travel Supplement?

The Domestic Violence Travel Supplement is a scheme to help victims of domestic violence meet additional travel costs.

If you have been subjected to domestic violence, you can apply for the Supplement regardless of your means, employment status or whether you are a full-time student. This applies for an initial three-month period.

The amount you receive will be based on your individual circumstances and the actual costs of your essential journeys, including fuel costs if you use your own vehicle.

How do I qualify?

To qualify, you must satisfy the standard Habitual Residence Condition. You do not need to be receiving any other Department of Social Protection payment to be eligible.

What happens after three months?

You may apply for a further three-month extension. This will be subject to a means assessment and a review of your eligibility.

What if I don’t have the documents straight away?

If you are unable to provide the required documentation immediately, the Department can issue an Additional Needs Payment for one week to give you time to source the necessary supporting documents.

The Domestic Violence Travel Supplement is administered by Community Welfare Officers

in the Department of Social Protection.
