Today, Women’s Aid launches a new report ‘Behind Closed Doors: Femicide Watch 1996 – 2016’.  The Femicide Watch Report is the culmination of 20 years of the Women’s Aid Femicide Monitoring Project.  Since 1996, Women’s Aid has, using newspaper records, charted and highlighted violent deaths where the victims are female in the Republic of Ireland.

We are launching the report at a seminar today to mark the UN Day Opposing Violence against Women (25th November 2016) and will lead a nationwide moment of remembrance for the 209 women who have died violently over the past 20 years.  We remember too the 16 children who were killed alongside their mothers.

Day Two: 204 women have been murdered in Ireland since 1996.

Posted on November 26, 2014

Day 2

204 women murdered since 1996

Female homicide is the extreme end of the violence against women spectrum. To highlight this issue Women's Aid has been collating data on female homicide in Ireland since the beginning of 1996.

To date, 204 women have been died violently in the Republic of Ireland. That is an average of 12 women a year losing their lives in the most tragic and brutal circumstances. Each woman leaves behind devastated family, friends and in many cases, children.

Our statistics relating to resolved cases, show that women are more likely to be killed in their own homes than any other location (62%), that they most likely know their killer (89%) and that in 99% of cases the perpetrator was male.

Remembering Stolen Lives Womens Aid-2

Women's Aid Annual One in Five Campaign to mark the 16 Days of Opposing Violence against Women Campaign begins tomorrow which is the International Day Opposing Violence against Women.

Women's Aid launched the 2014 campaign last week with a minute’s silence outside Dáil Éireann in memory of 78 women murdered by their partners or ex-partners since 1996. 10 children who were murdered alongside their mothers were also remembered. The event featured a sombre display of 78 pairs of women’s shoes and 10 pairs of children’s shoes outside Leinster House that acted as the starkest reminder of the dangerous and sometimes fatal nature of domestic abuse.
