Remembering Stolen Lives

Today is Day 16 of the 16 Days of Action and UN Human Rights Day. There is no greater violation of a woman’s human rights than the right to life itself.

Since Women’s Aid started to keep record in 1996, 1 in every 2 female homicide victims in Ireland has been murdered by a current or former intimate partner.*

This means that 86 women have had their lives stolen by those who were closest to them – their boyfriends, husbands and partners or those they had ended relationships with. 11 children were also murdered alongside their mothers.

Today we remember stolen lives - the 86 women and 11 children and their families and friends left to mourn them.

We also remember the rest of the 209 women who have been murdered in Ireland since 1996 including the 62% of women were murdered in their own homes.

Where cases have been resolved, we know that overall 89% of women are murdered by someone known to them – a current or former intimate partner, a son, neighbour, an acquaintance and 99% of perpetrators were men.

We remember those women murdered but where no perpetrator has been charged and the other cases yet to come to trial. Our thoughts are with their families who are waiting for justice.

'Still I Rise'...
You may shoot me with your words.
You may cut me with your eyes.
You may kill me with your hatefulness.
But still, like air, I'll Rise...

~ Maya Angelou
