National Balloon Action 2011
Join the Second Annual National Balloon Action in Solidarity with Women Living with Domestic Violence
What is it?
It is a nationwide solidarity campaign to highlight the levels of domestic violence against women in Ireland. Groups of five balloons, four black and a single white balloon with the One in Five logo will visually represent the number of women living with domestic violence in Ireland. The balloons are an arresting visual symbol of the impact of domestic violence on women in Ireland.
How?
The One in Five Balloon Action is flexible and works in a number of ways, depending on the kind of impact you want to create. The image could be used to stage a photograph for the local media, as part of an action in a public place, or the balloons can be released as a symbol of solidarity (or a release staged if you would prefer to control the disposal of the balloons).
Contact us for an Action Pack, including all the necessary materials, and further details on the One in Five National Balloon Action at 16days@womensaid.ie, or on 01 868 4721.
You can also take part in the Women's Aid Solidarity Balloon Release online by launching your own balloons here.
When?
On the 24th of November at 11am Women's Aid will be staging a Balloon Release outside Dail Eireann. Join us at that time, or at another time during the 16 Days of Action.
Where?
Wherever you think maximum impact will be. That might be in a public place such as a shopping, civic, or political centre, or simply by having a photo in the local papers.
Who?
All of us. If you are concerned about the issue, working actively to address it, or just want to get involved.
Environmental note:
The balloons are 100% biodegradable and are made of natural latex. They decompose at the same rate as a brown leaf. Also, we are recommending using helium to fill the balloons which is 100% natural gas, is non-flammable and disperses into the atmosphere. If you would like to control the disposal of the balloons, staging a release, a public action or a photograph in the media enables you to do this.
Media Resources
Sample Photocall Notice and Sample Media Release will be uploaded ahead of the campaign for your own use in inviting local media to your event.
