"Beating Hearts" Young Social Innovators

Beating Hearts Young Social Innovators group in Wexford is taking part in the 16 Days of Action. The aim of their project is to raise awareness of domestic abuse throughout the year.

They are holding an awareness day at their school on December 4, with representatives from the Wexford Women's Refuge and the Gardai, and joining the One in Five Women National Balloon Action. They are also displaying the daily Women's Aid infographics at their school.

They hope to carry out a fundraising choral performance and bucket collection on Grafton Street on December 11, with the proceeds going to support services for women experiencing abuse.

What makes the 16 Days of Action an important priority for your organisation?

The need to provide support to women and families experiencing domestic violence has been prioritised in our work plan.  The 16 days and our involvement at a local level is an ideal opportunity to highlight the supports available in the Resource Centre by linking into the very public national programme, which gives us more media coverage locally.

Gorey FRC programme of events for the 16 Days

Gorey Family Resource Centre will be taking part in the nationwide 16 Days of Action. The Centre will start this year's campaign with the launch of the One in Five Balloon Campaign on Monday 26th November at 10.00am, followed by tea and coffee, and a treat for attendees of a Mini Facial demonstration with Sheila.

There will be a programme of events throughout the rest of the 16 Days:

  • Wed 28th November 11.00am Traveller Women and their Teapot of Hope
  • Friday 30th November 11.00am Walk and Talk
  • Mon 3rd December 10.30am Make Up demonstration
  • Tues 4th December 10.00am Information Talk from Gardai, (role of Gardai)
  • Wednesday 5th Dec 10.30am Healing with Claire Bergin
  • Thursday-Friday 6th, 7th December 10.30 to 12.30 Craft Sale Morning

Raheen Family Resource Centre "In Her Shoes Exhibition"

After the success of last year's awareness campaign, Raheen Family Resource Centre is hosting another "In Her Shoes" exhibition for two days on November 27th and 28th ( between 9.30am - 2.30pm) to raise awareness as part of the 16 Days Campaign.

It will highlight the issue of domestic violence by displaying a pair of shoes for every woman who has been murdered in Ireland since 1996.

Come visit the 2 day exhibition in Raheen FRC and if possible come at 12pm on Tuesday 27th for a Ceremony of Light which is taking place then.

  • Dispelling the Myths Conference takes place at the Station House Hotel, Letterkenny
  • The North Inner City Domestic Violence Action Group is holding an event at Mountjoy Square Park, Dublin 1, on Wednesday 30th November at 11.30am. to remember the 174 women who lost their lives violently in Ireland since 1996
  • Kilmallock Family Support Network are organising a coffee morning and balloon release as part of the 16 Days Campaign.

Southwest Wexford 16 Days Youth Cafe & Photo Exhibition

Following on from a successful balloon release this morning, November 25th, Southwest Wexford Community Development Project will have a full schedule of events:

The Youth Cafe held twice weekly on Wednesday afternoons and Friday evenings will focus its December 7th session on healthy relationships, and how a safe and happy relationship should feel, and knowing when someone of something is going too far or becoming dangerous. This sesssion will incorporate the 2in2u Relationship Health Check Quiz and other materials.

From 6th-10th December, Blokes with Cameras, a men's photography group that meet in the centre, are holding a photo exhibition centered around the 16 Days of Action, visually portraying different aspects of the affects of abuse.

Gorey Family Resource Centre provides series of free seminars for public

Over the 16 Days of Action, Gorey Family Resource Centre are providing a series of information seminars for the public to raise awareness of different aspects of violence against women.

They will launch their campaign by taking part in the National Balloon Action on Thursday November 24th, and it will continue with presentations by the following groups:

Friday 25th November 10.30am Coffee morning with Gorey FRC

Monday 28th November 10.30am Wexford Women's Refuge

Tuesday 29th November 10.30am Rape & Sexual Abuse Support Services

Monday 5th December 10.30am Barnardos (on the affects of Domestic Violence on Children)

In Her Shoes Exhibition at Raheen FRC

Raheen Family Resource Centre are raising awareness of the impact of violence against women by displaying a pair of shoes for every woman who has been murdered in Ireland since 1996.

Visit the three-day exhibition in Raheen FRC between 9.30am - 2.30pm on 28th, 29th 30th November where staff from Raheen FRC will provide information on the campaign and how you can help eliminate domestic violence from our community.

On Tuesday 29th they will also hold a Walk of Remembrance from Raheen and a balloon released to commemorate the 174 women who have died since 1996 and the one in five who experience domestic violence today, as part of the National Balloon Action.

FAB Women's Group in Wexford

FAB Women's Group in Coolcotts, Wexford are joining in solidarity with victims of abuse during the 16 Days of Action and invite other groups in Wexford to show their support.

They are inviting men and women from the community and local councilors to join them at 10.45 at FAB community house, Ferndale Park for the release of balloons at 11am, 24th November as part of the National Balloon Action.

Each set of balloons will contain 4 black balloons and 1 white balloon. The white balloon represents the one in five women that experience domestic violence in Ireland.

The group is also holding a candlelight vigil in honour of the 174 women who have died violent deaths in Ireland since 1996.

Day 1: Roundup of Events

Today marks the first day of the 16 Days Campaign and there are lots of events taking place all around the country;

Women's Aid launched its National Balloon Action today with the release of 200 balloons outside Dail Eireann at 11am. The balloons were released in solidarity with the one in five women in Ireland experiencing domestic violence. Today also saw the launch of the Women's Aid online virtual balloon release . Details on how to launch your own virtual balloons are on www.womensaid.ie

 

The Women's Aid National Balloon Action was mirrored across the country with groups participating in nearly every county including Wexford, Mayo, Clare, Galway, Wicklow, Tipperary and Carlow.
