The Waterford Local Area Network will be running a radio and poster awareness campaign during the 16 Days. Advertisements will be run on WLRFM local radio, entitled "We're ready to listen even if you're not ready to speak", a campaign organized locally by Waterford LAN in co-operation with Women's Aid.

Waterford LAN are making use of the message contained in our 'Don't be Afraid' campaign run in September, in order to further reach women in the Waterford area experiencing abuse. The radio ads list local support numbers and our National Freephone Helpline 1800 341 900. They will also be distributing 'Don't be Afraid' posters, with local support service numbers added, to public places in the area.

Preview: First balloon Release of 2012, Guest blog from Ballybeg CDP

On a bright November morning in the community of Ballybeg in Waterford City we held a balloon release for the Women's Aid 16 days of action to raise awareness in our community about domestic violence.

The balloon release took place on Thursday 8th of November at 11am. Members of the community came along as well as staff members and students in programmes at the centre.

Before the balloon release the manager here at the centre, Liz Riches, said a few words about Women's Aid and what the balloon release signifies. She explained about the one in five women in Ireland who suffer domestic abuse, highlighting that many women are afraid to speak up about it and unaware that there is help available.

Launch of the revised edition of the “Enough is Enough” Booklet - Waterford

To mark the 16 Days of Action on Violence Against Women 2011, Waterford Local Area Network will highlight the issue of violence against women by launching the newly revised edition of the "Enough is Enough" Booklet - a safety and empowerment guide for women experiencing domestic violence:

Venue: Waterford City Council Central Library, Ladylane
Date and Time: Thursday December 8th, 2011 11.00am - 1.00pm
Guest Speaker: Maimuna Kanyamala

Maimuna Kanyamala, who will launch the Booklet, is a feminist activist from Mwanza, Tanzania. She is the Executive Director and a founder of Kivulini Women's Rights Organisation, which works to mobilise local communities to prevent violence against women and girls. Maimuna was awarded the 2011 Tanzanian Woman of Courage Award by the US embassy in Tanzania in April this year.

Ballybeg community groups join forces for the 16 Days of Action

Ballybeg Community Development Project & Waterford Travellers CDP are joining in solidarity with victims of abuse during the 16 Days of Action and invite other groups in Ballybeg to show their support.

They are inviting men and women in the community to Join them at 10.45 in Centra Car Park Ballybeg for the release of of balloons at 11am, as part of the National Balloon Action.

Each set of balloons will contain 4 black balloons and 1 white balloon. The white balloon represents the one in five women that experience domestic violence in Ireland.

Everyone is encouraged to bring something to make noise with or dress up or read a poem...or just be there to oppose violence against women.
