Annual Art and Poetry Exhibition in Donegal raises awareness of the dynamics of domestic violence
Posted on November 08, 2012
As part of our 16 Days of Action, Against Violence against Women Campaign, 25th Nov - 10th December 2012, The Donegal Women's Domestic Violence Service are launching their Art & Poetry Exhibition once again with contributions from local secondary schools and youth groups as well as individual contributions.
Here is one brilliant example of a poetry entry:
She's Going Back
"She's going back" he told me
As I walked down the stairs
He stood with his back against the wall
In his eyes I saw his fear
Just a little boy aged 4
He was old beyond his years
Once more he'd seen his dad abuse his mammy
And words of hate had assailed his ears
They came into the Refuge
Late at night and terrified
So numbed by what had happened
Neither of them could even cry

Campaign Spotlight on Local Action: Donegal Domestic Violence Service
Posted on October 11, 2011
Women's Aid reached out to a number of community groups involved in last year's 16 Days of Action Campaign and asked them how they highlighted the issue of violence against women in their local areas. Today, we are featuring The Donegal Women's Domestic Violence Service (DWDVS) and the creative strategies they used to educate young people about domestic violence and empower them to take action.
The Donegal Women's Domestic Violence Service (DWDVS) works to empower and support women to regain, reclaim and retain control of their lives and to live free from the fear of violence and of abuse. DWDVS also provides help to children who suffer, or have suffered from, physical, mental/psychological or sexual abuse as a result of domestic violence.

WA: What makes the 16 Days of Action an important priority for your organisation?
DDVS: It provides an opportunity to highlight the dynamics of domestic violence, especially with young people and encourages them to think about healthy and unhealthy relationships, which hopefully will promote positive choices in their present or future relationships.
