Domestic Violence Coalition Day 6: Alice's Story

The Domestic Violence Coalition addresses additional barriers to seeking help and escaping domestic abuse faced by migrant women in Ireland. Each day of the 16 Days of Action, the Domestic Violence Coalition is sharing one woman's story, to illustrate the issues which we address.

The Coalition is made up of the following organisations: Womens Aid, Adapt Domestic Abuse Services, Doras Luimní, Nasc – the Irish Immigrant Support Centre, the Domestic Violence Advocacy Service Sligo, Akidwa, Longford Women’s Link, Sonas Housing, the Immigrant Council of Ireland and Ascend Domestic Abuse Service.

Even children need to seek refuge with their mothers

In 2011, there were 2,129 admissions of women and 3,632 admissions of children to refuge in Ireland (Safe Ireland Statistics 2011).

However, on over 2,537 occasions, services were unable to accommodate women and their children because the refuge was full or there was no refuge in their area.

In Sonas Housing’s 2011 Annual Review, included statistics that four out of five victims of domestic violence seeking refuge accomodation from their service were turned away because the service was at capacity. Almost 850 women made contact in 2011, including 250 who needed long-term housing or outreach support, but on 550 occasions women were turned away. Approximately 70% of these women had children.

Lifeline Inishowen Beauty Day and Fundraising events

In addition to joining the National Balloon Action, Lifeline Inishowen will be inviting ladies to a pampering day, and also carrying out fundraising for their services during the 16 Days.

On Thursday the 28th of November a Bake Sale will take place in the Carndonagh Lifeline centre. Savory cakes, cup cakes and cookies as well tea scones will be the order of the day.

A Bucket Collection on Friday the 29th and Saturday 30th of November will be held in the Supervalu shopping centre in Buncrana.

On Thursday December the 5th Moville Community College will host a Balloon Release in order to highlight the levels of domestic violence against women in Ireland.
