Children witness domestic abuse

Posted on November 28, 2013

The majority of children living in a home where domestic violence is present are affected by the abuse. Children are victims of domestic violence both when directly targeted by the perpetrator of abuse and when witnessing the violence directed at their mother. Research has shown that there is a connection between domestic violence and child abuse and that witnessing the abuse is in itself a form of emotional abuse. (Listening to Children: Children's Stories of Domestic Violence, Hogan, F. and O'Reilly M, Office of the Minister For Children, 2007)

In 2012, 4,451 calls to the Women's Aid National Freephone Helpline revealed children were bearing witness to the most horrific abuse and violence against their mothers.

Posted on November 20, 2013

speak up cafe logo

Domestic and sexual violence is an alarming problem in our country. Services are there to help but are they good enough?, asks the Mid West Regional Advisory Committee on Violence Against Women.

They are seeking feedback on services through consultations with people whose lives have been affected by domestic abuse or sexual violence. I'm inviting service users and community members to an informal Speak-Up Cafe, where participants can tell organisations how they can improve their services, meet the services, help make a difference, and of course enjoy a cuppa.

Participant organisations include Gardai, city and county councils; health, social work, refuge, rape crisis, and legal services and many more.
